Automation Confidence Checks: Verifying Preconditions Before an Automated Action

A practical guide to checking data, permissions, dependencies, and business conditions before an automated workflow takes action.

Reliable automation should not assume that yesterday’s conditions still apply today. A confidence check is a small set of preconditions evaluated immediately before a workflow performs an important action.

Check the inputs that matter

Validate required fields, freshness, expected formats, identifiers, and values that fall outside normal operating bounds. Route uncertain inputs to review instead of forcing them through the happy path.

Confirm authority and destination

Before sending, changing, approving, or deleting anything, confirm that the workflow still has the intended permission and that the target system, account, record, or queue is the expected one.

Test critical dependencies

Check whether required services are reachable and whether their responses match the contract the workflow expects. A successful network connection is not the same as a safe dependency state.

Choose a safe failure behavior

When a precondition fails, stop or hold the affected work, record the reason, preserve context, and route the exception to an owner. Avoid silently substituting guessed values.
